Class Code:
4653
Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:
Code 4653 is applied to insureds engaged in the manufacture of animal glues in either liquid or powder form or glues made from a nitrocellulose base requiring the use of various solvents such as acetone and ethyl acetate as well as glue involving other plastic compounds. All of the basic materials are received from others. The processes involved in animal glue manufacturing vary depending upon whether the glue is made from bones, or from animal hides, ears, sinews and fish scraps or just from fish heads, fins and tails. Basically, the operations involve soaking and softening of the hides, sinews and fish scraps in lime pits, washing, boiling, diluting with water, skimming off oils and drawing off the glue liquor, which is filtered and piped into heated receiving tanks. The boiling, diluting, skimming and filtering processes may be repeated four or five times. The first runoff produces a high grade of glue, the next runoff a second grade, etc. The operations are similar for fish glue manufacturing and bone glue manufacturing except that after boiling and skimming off the oil, the bone glue liquor is evaporated, chilled, dried and pulverized. The liquid glues are automatically filled into tubes or small containers and the dry glue into drums. Incidental operations performed by glue manufacturers may include bone crushing, grinding and bagging of bone meal; the filling of solidified grease into drums from the oil settling tanks; and the pressing, drying, pulverizing and bagging of tankage for fertilizer.
