Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:
The manufacture of these fabrics contemplates similar operations but there are differences in the raw materials. With respect to velvet, the pile is almost invariably made of silk but the backing may be natural silk, artificial silk, wool or cotton. On the other hand, in plush the backing may be of silk, cotton or wool or a combination of these materials. The pile of plush may be silk or wool; mohair is also used. Normally, plants do not card or spin their cotton or wool yarn, the yarn being received on the cop or spool. Silk is received in skeins and wound from the skein to the bobbins or spools. The looms used for weaving plush and velvet do not vary a great deal from those used in weaving silk, wool or cotton cloth.
