Code 4568 is applied to insureds engaged in the production or refining of salt, potash or borax. Salt ores, amines, caustic soda and soda ash are received from others. Raw brines also may be received from others or the brines may be pumped from salt wells or lakes by the insured. This classification contemplates the driving of wells and the pumping of the raw brines. Raw brines are partially evaporated and salt ores are dissolved in water to produce a brine of the desired concentration for processing. Each brine contains a number of salts and other minerals which must be removed to produce a concentration of the particular salt desired. Common salt (sodium chloride) is refined by adding caustic soda and soda ash to remove impurities. Muriate of potash (potassium chloride) is refined by adding an amine to the brine which causes the sodium salts to float to the surface where they are skimmed off. Borax is separated from potassium chloride by a rapid cooling of a hot brine.
