Class Code:
1218
Per NCCI's Scopes Code Description:
Code 1218 is assigned to insureds who mine phosphate rock using electric draglines, many of which weigh over 1 million pounds. The machines strip off the overburden and then scoop out the mineral rock, which is deposited in a pit. High-pressure water guns are directed at the mass of phosphate. It is broken into a slurry, which is washed through a screen and into a high-pressure pumping system. A pipeline carries the slurry to a processing plant where the phosphate is separated and dried. The water is recycled by pumping it to a large convoluted lake system. The water enters muddy and brown, travels several miles, and drops its mud and silt, providing fishing and waterfowl cover in its cleaner parts.
